All 5 of these species are anadromous, which means they can survive in both fresh and salt water. When salmon hatch from their eggs. They enter their alevin stage of getting all of their nutrients from their yolk sack. Once they absorb all of their nutreints, they search for their own food as frys and later as parrs. Once they become parrs, they make their way down rivers and once they meet an area where the fresh water from the river meets the salt water from the ocean (this area is called an estuarie) they start the process of smoltification where their bodys change to allow themselves to live in salt water. After multiple years of living in the ocean they go back to their home river. Then after undergoing many hormonal and physical changes to attract mates they return to their spawning grounds where they were hatched to restart the cycle. After salmon spawn, they usually die and give nutrients to the river.
